Friendly Canada

I have always heard that Canadians are friendly. That is, friendlier than Americans - or at the very least friendlier than people in the Northeast (who isn’t?). I have found this to be true. Only a couple days in it has been a little weird because school hasn’t started and I do not know anyone. Not one person.

I live in a predominantly gay area of Toronto. Not joking, the population is mostly gay guys. This doesn’t bother me, as a matter of fact, I can’t think of a better neighborhood for a short girl living alone to reside in. I am trying to get up the courage to go to a bar alone, but I am not quite there yet.

So even though I don’t really have a means to make new friends I feel like everyone I have met has been awesome. I know two guys from the bank who have been super nice and told me to pop by and say hello. The lady at the convenience store knows my name. I went out to a restaurant on friday and the waitress told me she would be my first restaurant friend. Today I bought a burrito and two nice girls explained to me what a “toonie” is (two dollars).

This makes me feel a little more excited about being here. Don’t get me wrong I have always dreamed of just picking up and moving to a big city. But every once in a while I get this shred of doubt that I have made a terrible mistake and should be living somewhere where I know at least one person.

What My Friend Thinks Of Canada

  • Me: And this one Canadian was going on and on about how ignorant we Americans are of Canada.
  • Ryan: I like to think of Canada as America's attic, where we put everything we don't want.
  • Me: Oooh good one, like free health care?
  • Ryan: Free health care? No, we don't need that here in America. Put it in the attic.
  • Note the "Me" was my friend. I am not Ryan either.
